University Campus Facilities

The School is situated in salubrious environs on the top of the Priyadarshini Hills, 14 kilometres off Kottayam and about 70 kilometres from the Cochin International Airport. It has a three-storied building with adequate facilities for classrooms, library, cartographic visualia, computer services, besides a well-equipped seminar hall.

The School has introduced a variety of audio-visual information systems and information-based programmes through computer-internet services, OHP visualization and has LCD technology for special lectures and seminars. The Library-information service and faculty-administrative staff of the School have received training in and periodic exposures to advanced computer systems and its multiple uses for social science research.

The Library of the School is the first computerized departmental library in the University. It has a collection of over 4000 titles with the most recently published books. The School also enjoys the support facilities of the nearby University Library, which is one of the best in South India in terms of latest books and journals. The number and quality of journals subscribed in the realm of the disciplines of the School is very impressive. The School maintains very good computer services. It has several advanced computers and accessories. Apart from these, for instructional purposes, the School has Over Head Projectors (OHP) and LCD projectors.

The students of the School get the benefit of the centralised health services provided by the university. Similarly, they can make use of the facilities offered by the School of Physical Education of the University. The University provides students with the hostel and canteen facilities.

The School of International Relations and Politics has been able to sustain a credible academic record during the last two decades. The faculty members have established themselves as scholars with high-level perseverance, intellectual ability, deep theoretical and empirical insights and social orientation. Publications of the students and teachers have appeared in reputed international journals and edited volumes of outstanding stature. The School has a Working Paper Programme, wherein the specific contributions of the teachers and research scholars are published after a thorough and critical evaluation in an open session. The Library of the School is well developed with the best of collections in the discipline.

Details of National and International Linkages
 
The School of International Relations and Politics has established specific academic engagements and exchanges with several institutions and universities in India and abroad. These national and international linkages are getting widened to develop new areas of study and research in Political Science, International Relations and Human Rights. The institutions with which such linkages have been developed are; London School of Economics and Political Science; Ecole des Etudes Haute en Sciences Sociale, Paris; Department of Political Science, University of Geneva; Salzburg Seminar, Austria; Central European University, Budapest; Department of Political Science, Bucknell University; USA; University of Delaware, USA; Cairo University, Egypt; Hebrew University, Jerusalem; Fulbright Programmes through the US Educational Foundation in India; Jinan University, China; Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Delhi Policy Group, New Delhi; Department of Political Science, University of Hyderabad; Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvanathapuram; Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi; and the other universities in Kerala.
 
Progression to Employment and Further Study
 
The programmes offered in the School have the chief objective of providing students with the necessary skill and calibre in charting out their career in diverse fields from civil society sector. The School is proud to have a distinct record of its students working and researching in several countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, China, Austria, Zambia, Oman, UAE, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, etc,. While a good number of students have taken up teaching and research in various colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning in India and abroad, there are several working in civil services, media (both national and international), NGOs and public/private sector organizations. The programmes of the School have a high orientation to research and several students are pursuing M.Phil and Ph.D not only in the School, but elsewhere such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum; M.S. University, Baroda; University of Delhi; University of Bombay; University of Madras; University of Lancaster, London School of Economics and Political Science; etc.
 
Financial aid to Students
 
M.A, M.Phil/PhD students generally get the support of the university and the Government of Kerala. Besides, they have received special financial assistance from various NGOs and institutions such as the US Educational Foundation in India (through Fulbright Programmes) UGC, ICSSR, and Sunya Foundation. The Department of Student Services of the University also provides special financial support to needy students. Likewise, several of the former students have received fellowships and awards such as the International Development Scholarship from the London School of Economics, Israeli Government Scholarship, Ford Foundation Scholarship, Japan Foundation Fellowship, etc.

Tom Travis Endowment has been recently established(2005) in the school. This endowment is sponsored by Dr. Tom Travis, Former Director and Head of the International Relations Programme, Bucknell University, Pensylvania, United States who has also been a Honorary visiting Professor in the School.

Endowment resources are distributed to needy students in terms of scholarship/partial assistance, for which financial assistance is not available from other sources. Selection for the award of the same shall be made by the Faculty Council of the school on merit cum means.
 
Alumni
 
The School has an Alumni Association operating at different levels. The New Delhi chapter of the association was inaugurated at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in March 2002. The students of the School are found in several walks of life, engaged in a variety of professions. Apart from India they are working in countries such as Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia and Vietnam. Similarly, many live and work in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Austria, Poland, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, China, Oman, and Switzerland. They include teachers in universities such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, University of Jammu, Jammu, MS University Baroda, colleges and other educational institutions, research officers/associates in agencies like Indian Council of Social Science Research, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Indian Social Institute, New Delhi, embassies and Foreign Service institutions etc. Several of the students are pursuing research in well-known institutions like the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Lancaster, University of Warsaw, etc. Most of the important newspapers in India and abroad have the former students of the School on their staff. These include New York Times/International Herald Tribune, Vietnam News, Oman Daily Observer, Khaleej Times, The Times of India, Hindustan Times, Indian Express, The Hindu, Deepika, Mathrubhumi, Malayala Manorama, Economic and Political Weekly, etc. The students also manage and work in internet portals and web publishing such as the Keralamonitor.com, Gulfmonitor, Brittanica.com, etc. Many students have entered the civil service and state government service too. Non-governmental organizations, policy groups, think tanks, industrial organizations, etc, in India and abroad have our students working for them.
